Wearing Bandaid For Cuts

Outside the Vancouver Art Gallery today there was a rally protesting the BC Government’s proposed cuts to charities funded by Gaming (money from casinos, lotteries, Keno, etc.). Sectors affected by the cuts include the arts, sports, the environment, social services, public safety, and parents advisory councils.

There wasn’t a huge turnout at the gallery steps on the dark, cold, wet day, but the message came across. Bandaids were handed out to show how everyone is affected by the “cuts”.

  1. Thanks for covering this event. Just to clarify, this protest focused on the Gaming cuts. The sectors that are covered by Gaming, in their entirety are: arts, culture and sport; the environment, human and social services; public safety and; parents advisory councils (or district councils in schools).
I feel that given the current “divide and conquer” tactic of reducing support for some charities while suggesting that others are more important in an economic recession, it’s important to be clear that Saturday’s rally wasn’t about “Gaming and arts cuts”. It was about Gaming cuts to charities — charities from all sectors. In this issue it is imperative that we show solidarity across sectors. But thank you for covering the event — it was cold and wet.
